Taihape - River Valley Adventure Lodge

After leaving Turangi I took a bus to Taihape and stayed a night at the River Valley Adventure Lodge. The lodge is located at the foot of the majestic Ruahine Ranges on the banks of the Rangitikei River, 30km East of Taihape. The lodge offers guests a range of accommodations and adventure options. Adventures range from the excitement of Grade 5 white water rafting and kayaking, to gentle float trips and fly fishing, from hill country horse trekking, to the River Valley pitch 'n' putt golf course.

Immediately after I arrived I jumped in with an afternoon rafting trip down the Rangitikei River's premier grade 5 white water section. We traveled down the gorge section of the river through 10 major rapids, 8-meter cliff jumps, and stunning scenery. It lived up to the reputation as truly one of New Zealand's finest white water rafting trips.

The next day I fished up river from the gorge I rafted and caught a few rainbow trout that were hiding along the cliffs. Then I finished up my day with a nice and easy 9 hole golfing in the afternoon before getting on a bus South to Wellington.
