Teaching Experiences – Week 2

Kia Ora!

My second week of teaching at AJHS was really great. I spent Monday and Tuesday teaching/observing many of the same math and science courses I attended last week. I have been working a lot with Mr. Cluett’s Environmental Science class, and this week I taught the students how to map trees on the campus using a hand held G.P.S. I also went into two year 7 classes (6th grade) and taught them about Alaskan culture and history. Most students at AJHS see Alaska as a land of only ice, igloos and eskimos (like most other people) and I really enjoyed sharing stories and answering the questions they had. I have gotten a chance to meet lots of the students here and they have all been very interested in learning about Alaska.

On Thursday I went with the same year 7 classes on a field trip to the Waitakere Ranges as a part of their “Adopt a Stream” curriculum. This unit aims to teach students about the water cycle, the role of water in nature, the importance of healthy catchments and an insight into how Auckland’s water is managed.

We did water testing in a stream with a representative from Watercare Services and then took the students on a hike to the Upper Nihotipu Dam. After learning about the catchments methods for Auckland’s water we took a ride on the Rainforest Express train to our bus.

The Rainforest Express takes its riders from the Nitotipu Dam along the water piping through 10 tunnels full of glowworms to Jacobson Depot. It was a really cool field trip to attend with the AJHS students and parents.
