For my first couple of weeks of my overseas experience at Albany Junior High School I have been placed with the Head of Learning Area - Science Mr. John Cluett. When I return from the term break (May 11th) I will be working with the Head of Learning Area -Mathematics Mrs. Jan Thomas my last two weeks.
I spend the first few days this week shadowing Mr. Cluett in his Environmental Science and Human Biology courses. On Tuesday we did a sheep heart dissection lab with the two classes of Year 10 students and on Thursday we did some water sample testing with year 7 students for a field trip next week.
I also had a chance to observe a Food Technology class, a Mathematics class, a Health/PE class and teach two year 7 classes about Alaska.
On Friday I helped chaperon a field trip to the Auckland War Memorial Museum with a group of year 8 students. The students were studying the history of New Zealand Soldiers that fought for the British Empire in World War 1. The museum representatives did a role-play drama for the students and then toured us around the museum to see the memorials for the soldiers. The museum trip was really interesting, I never knew how many kiwi soldiers died fighting so far away from their home country.

All in all it was a really great first week at A.J.H.S. The students and staff were very welcoming and supportive towards a visiting international teacher at their school.
Cheers!
